I'd try and find somewhere better to visit than the ARC at Valpo. It's another high school gym like ours. Go to Chicago. Have some fun in the city then take in a game at UIC. They have no fans anyway and you could make it a home game. Good call! I went to UIC last year with the Alumni association and it was a great experience. They have a really cool stadium, it's like a tiny professional basketball arena with legit concessions and everything.

That is one of our options, we just have to take into account the day of week, time of the game, and other scheduling conflicts because we cant stay over night or have students miss classes.

www.oakland.edu/view_news.aspx?nid=11904I totally agree about needing a long term plan to sustain interest and growth...and that is not an overnight transition. The low hanging fruit here is to indoctrinate the students with school spirit. Find a way to get them to come to games and as long as there is a decent product, many will continue to come after graduation. With a large regional alumni base, this should not be an unreasonable expectation. Now that we are playing teams with more local name recognition as part of the Horizon League, wouldn't it be fantastic to have enough demand to play Valpo or Detroit at the Palace? I don't think that should be considered an unrealistic 5 year goal.

oudrummerSo...driving into work today, I heard B.O.C's "Don't Fear the Reaper", and thought to myself that the Pep Band needs to learn that one. Especially if we are up by 20 with about 3 or 4 minutes to go...get the cowbell going (can you picture the Grizz Gang getting into the "COWBELL"! Just thought it would make for some good theater, and who doesn't love "MORE COWBELL"

As a professional drummer/percussionist, I hate everything about that skit and song. The problem is how the band learns tunes. Music is purchased and learned in the fall. They don't add music mid season as the band doesn't rehearse after the first semester. Also, unless the tune is available for purchase, it won't happen. The band in it's hey day had members that would write music for the group. But it's not the easiest group to work with from the top down in that regard. "Fun" ideas like that are usually met with resistance from the director and interactive ventures are usually frowned upon. When the band was at it's craziest many of those individuals were heavily frowned upon by the director. He wants it to be a group known for playing well, and cheering is second. I personally disagree and feel it needs to be equal. There's many many layers to band and it's politics. Way too much for a message board.

oudrummerI noticed it is a lot of the same songs every game, which is fine because not everyone knows that. I will say that I believe the band continues to get better and better each year. I would love to see them come up with a signature move/signature song that sets them apart from every other pep band. A song or routine that when there is a nationally televised game, the play by play people talk about it. Kind of like when the swimmers come to a game in their Speedos. That's a signature Oakland Grizz Gang thing...so much so I heard the play by play people for the MSU game talk about it this year...I think even Bill Walton might have mentioned it during the Arizona game. Bill Walton then again, knew so much about Oakland University, it was scary, but I digress. I don't like looking ahead to next year, but its hard not to with all this talent coming in. This team could get lots of attention, and I wouldn't be surprised if we are pre-season favorites next year. Hopefully the chemistry will be there, and the Dance/Cheer/Band and Grizz Gang all step up their game as well.

10 students. And that may be high. That's just embarrassing. People in charge of Grizz gang this year should be ashamed of themselves. That means in an organization with 5 officers, they didn't all show up and bring at least one friend. I realize it's a new semester and there's a lot going on for a college student. But 10 students in the Grizz gang which used to be known as one of the best mid major student sections in the country is absolutely embarrassing. Something needs to change.

What happened to the Grizz Gang? Seriously, anyone have anymore insight? Everyone I was with at tonight's game was in complete and utter shock that there was really no Grizz Gang. Stunned.
