I will gladly turn Grizz talk over to someone else or delete it if it's an issue or rename it.
The Joe is a dump. It's harsh but the truth. I will firmly stand by it. Moving downtown is a terrible decision. When our games on tv look like the big ten tournament games with 60 people in the stands, it's going to be awful. It's a move done that in a few years with the new stadium, hopefully pans out. I never see it being successful. How many people will need to be in that arena for it to look good on tv or have a good game day experience? Nobody knows yet. It's a lot of eggs in a basket we know nothing about. Joe Louis does NOTHING for me. The only saving grace is the bathrooms will be less of a problem with only 4,000 people in it, max.

Also assuming that anyone local will want to attend the tournament games as a casual fan is a major assumption. You build on the fan base you have and grow from that. Read the other boards in the league and talk to the other fans. Nobody is excited about this. It's a money move, pure and simple.

From a league standpoint: This is so dumb. Leagues like the A10 MVC and WCC can get away we this. We can't. Valpo is the only team with something I would consider a great crowd and even they never sell out.
From our perspective: This is huge for us. We have a home court advantage in every tournament game for however long this contract runs. My thinking is the Oakland-Mercy game is the only chance of any thing close to a sell out (which I hate).

All I know is there will still only be about 1,000 Mercy fans at the games

I think this is an excellent idea for the league & us. People have complained about empty seats, which is valid, but we will be playing in the Red Wings new stadium! In Lecrones interview he said 22 other leagues have a neutral site game eg. MAC- Cleveland, BIG - Indy or Chicago, etc. This is huge for fans who want to attend the tournament too, so you won't have to go from say GB to Valpo or OU in a short time. Overall its a good win for everyone in my view.

Although attendance is an issue, I think this is a good move. All Oakland (and Detroit) fans should be super happy about the tournament's location! It will also give fans the opportunity to "plan" a trip to the tournament in advance (hotel, call off work, etc.)
OU fans have been talking about how far away tournaments have been and how our fans can't get to the games for years ... well now is our chance! We better pack the place and develop our fan base. It starts with the fans...we all need to talk this tournament up to our family members and friends.
The OU-Detroit rivalry has given positive press time to both schools ... This new tournament will only help both of our schools. It may even help us create more fans. I bet the OU-Detroit rivalry had something to do with this move.
I wonder what the court is going to look like?
