Credit where credit is due: Wright State and Northern Kentucky are the best programs in the league right now. That was a great showcase game for the league in a great arena with great atmosphere. This is the third-straight year they've finished in the top 2 spots in the regular season. If one of them gets the auto bid, it will also be the third-straight year one of the two is in the tourney.
What will be interesting to watch is whether this is just a great era in those schools' history, due to a combination of current coaches and players, or if this is something more sustainable. There's no doubt both are set up for success in terms of facilities. NKU already lost a coach and a Player of the Year, and they're still right there. The gradual, year-over-year improvement of seniors like Tyler Sharpe and Dantez Walton would give me hope as an NKU fan that this is sustainable. Would it surprise anyone if Silas Adheke or Adrian Nelson turned into an All-League caliber player next year after playing bit roles the last couple years? No, that's consistently what NKU has done since John Brannen got the job, and it seems to be continuing with Darrin Horn.
At Wright State, at least Oakland killer Cole Gentry will be graduating, but don't bet against Coach Nagy keeping something rolling. He built something impressive at South Dakota State, recruited two eventual All-Americans in different eras there (Nate Wolters and Mike Daum). Both Gentry and Loudon Love were SDSU recruits, too. As impressive as those two have been, my hat is off to that program for Bill Wampler. He's on the All-Hair team, but I don't even know if he'll make it to First Team, but he's one of the most efficient dudes playing right now. I really want to know Wright State's strength and conditioning regiment. Wampler was a 200 pound dude at Drake, and at WSU he's 220 and straight ripped. Every time I see Cole Gentry I am also surprised at how strong that guy is.
Tanner Holden appears to be Wampler's heir apparent. One of the most impressive freshmen in the league in my mind in terms of his composure and ability to hit shots when called upon as a fourth or fifth option. He's one of four starters shooting the lights out from three in league play (Wampler 46%; Hall 38%; Gentry 43%; Holden 61%).
The league is getting stronger at the top, and perhaps in the middle too. I think most fanbases would tell you that Youngstown State, Green Bay, and Cleveland State all have the right coaches in place. I see the guard talent at Milwaukee and wonder why they're not a few games better, but I tend to think Pat Baldwin is in a good spot there (and we'll see what happens with his Five-Star recruit son). UIC people disdain McClain, and who knows what will happen at IUPUI. Davis at Detroit is a proven coach, despite the early struggles at Detroit. But for the first time in several years, it appears there will be some stability in the league.
As much as I don't like it for Oakland because it makes it all the more tough, it's good for the league to get some consistency going. Horizon is ranked 24th in KenPom, five spots below the Summit League, and over ten spots from where it resided for much of the 2000s.
