Just throwing this out there...I know it's a long shot, but you never know...
Loyola moving from MVC to A10 creates a spot in the MVC. A10 adding Loyola, means that the A10 needs to add another school to get to an even number
I truly believe that the A10 would make more sense for us...here are my thoughts...
OU Swim/Dive competed in the A10 Classic earlier this year and they totally held their own
Even though our O'rena only seats 4000, it would still be larger than 3 other A10 schools.
From a geographical standpoint, when looking a the westernmost schools in the A10 (Dayton, Loyola, St Louis) - Oakland is a very nice fit
We have won 5 of the last 6 McCafferty trophies, and we are on pace to make it 6 out of 7. Would any of our teams not be able to compete in the A10? I think they can all hold their own.
Finally - how great would a new rivalry between Loyola and Oakland be...teacher vs student...it would be amazing!
What do you all think...you think we are in the conversation?

OU was in conversations with the A10 before we left the Summit or shortly after. The costs were too much, so discussions ended. The A10 geographic footprint would be expensive for us and there is no way around that. Also for men's basketball, we would be a consistent mid to lower level team in the A10. The MVC IMHO is a different profile type of school, I don't know how much OU fits there. It would take some years for us to be competitive there too. I think the Horizon is the perfect place for us right now both geographically, level of investment in MBB, and caliber of competition. We need to win championships in MBB both regular season & tourneys are the goals for me. Of course it's easier said than done.

I wouldn't count us out though in basketball, it wouldn't take us that long to get competitive in Basketball. Plus, I wonder if the A10 plans to have an EAST/WEST division, based in the fact that they are going to 16 teams. As for the money...it's sad how little the university invests in the student athlete facilities. Our teams continue to do great things with less amenities. Its like we are the Oakland A's of the Horizon League. Just waiting and waiting and waiting for someone else to help pay for it.

That’s the nature of public universities in Michigan. OU is vastly underfunded by the state compared to the other public schools. So without private donations, it’s not feasible to appropriate large sums of money to athletics. If you recall, the Orena/natatorium was funded through a service fee on tuition for many years. Students now pay a far greater percentage of tuition than they did 25 years ago.
I still think money will need to be spent on facilities before we go anywhere. Loyola has outstanding basketball facilities. Travel costs are certainly a consideration as well.

A move to a bigger conference, with more teams and more national exposure could bring more corporate sponsorship opportunities to offset costs.
It wasn't that long ago when we were in the Summit League and these players had to fly everywhere. A10 Travel would still be way better than the travel they endured in the Summit
