Oakland and MSU were originally slated to play at LCA this year. That game was moved to Breslin. MSU played Baylor at LCA today. Lowest attendance yet for a college basketball game at LCA. Also the first time MSU was unranked at the time of the game (although MSU was ranked in the top 5 in the preseason and played like it today), so while that is surely a big influencer of attendance, it is nice to look at these results and have a sense that Oakland has been a sliver of the reason attendance has historically been great at LCA. Basically, this tells me Oakland-MSU is a good proposition for all parties and I hope the other two parties realize this going forward.
Saturday, December 16, 2017 - 2:00 tip - MSU ranked 6. 20,695. Double header that followed UDM-U of M.
Saturday, December 14, 2019 - Noon tip - MSU ranked 16. 18,145.

Attendance may have also been impacted by the Lions game downtown, but the point is well taken. From a marketing standpoint, they should just play this game every year at LCA - everyone benefits. It should also be noted that MSU football is exploring options to play more of their last November home games at Ford Field. Given Kampe’s fear this series may end, Oakland may fit into an overall MSU/Detroit marketing strategy moving forward.
