Why am I not allowed to contact a prospective athlete? I have no affiliations with any program basketball staff. I'm just a fan, and could be considered a friend of the player.

Please! Nate is a friend of Darren's and has every right to state conversation conducted between the two, if he so chooses on this unofficial OU Grizzlies blog. Nate's a student at OU and is not influencing anything but reporting conversation between two friends.
Nate, this is not an NCAA violation based on comments above. Keep on producing the informative information that assists in keeping this blog going. Please don't be discouraged by these comments.
I understand potential concern but there is none here.

Thank you Gary and no problem Grizzfan, at least you are looking out for the team. There is nothing wrong with fans/friends talking to a prospective player. It would be different if I had an affiliation with the school.

Unless you or Gary know the entire NCAA rule book on recruiting- be careful! sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=4060673

First off I am a friend of Mr. Darren Tillman. I'm not publicly starting a rally to try and influence him come to Oakland University. I understand you guys concern, but I am in no way violating the rules. If the rules state a recruit cannot have friends and you can't be friend of a recruit, then I am breaking the law. But if the world comes down to that, we are all in trouble.

The NCAA definition of “representative” includes, but is not limited to, boosters, alumni, faculty, staff and fans. Check out this site from Marist: goredfoxes.cstv.com/boosters/mari-ncaa-rules.htmlSo, I would suggest reading through that whole thing, before you post anything on here regarding your conversations with him.

Darren had 25pts, 6rbs, 3assists, 3stls, 4dunks, and went 9/11 from the freethrow line in his first game of the season. According to the director of the tournament, Darren was listed as an all tournament player as his team won the Championship of the Thanksgiving Tournament over Homewood-Flossmoor 75-65. Darren finished with 12pts, 6rbs, 5assists, 4steals, but limited action in the second half due to foul trouble.
