I cut this from the Milwaukee Business Journal about a possible new or updated arena for UM-Milwaukee. It mentions a minimum of 5,000 seating for Horizon League members? If Oakland were to move to the Horizon, what would be the best options for getting seating to 5,000.
Monday, February 15, 2010 UWM considers on-campus basketball arena The Business Journal of Milwaukee - by Rich Kirchen
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee plans to create a new on-campus basketball arena, meaning that men’s basketball games would return to the east side campus from downtown Milwaukee’s U.S. Cellular Arena.
George Koonce, who became UWM’s athletic director in April 2009, said in an interview that one of his top priorities is to bring men’s basketball back to campus. The Klotsche Center, where the team used to play, lacks the 5,000-seat capacity required by UWM’s conference the Horizon League, so either Klotsche will need to be expanded or an entirely new arena will be necessary, he said.

Look at Valpo since they joined the Horizon. They haven't even come close to getting an NCAA tourney birth. Actually, in 2008, we came moderately close (made the semifinals), but in 2009 and 2010 you are correct.

I too have wondered (worried) about Oakland leaving for the Horizon. It would easily be your ideal conference. I can see why you would still want to play in a lesser conference and have a much better shot at regular and post season titles and trip to the NCAA's.
You might save on traveling if...
USD and UND are both added to the Summit. That makes it 11. Add one more team (Denver, so they can be travel partners w/ SUU). Make it a two division league.
West Division and travel partners: SDSU - USD (1 hour distance) NDSU - UND (1 hour) UMKC - ORU (4 hours)
East: Oakland - IPFW (3 hours distance) IUPUI - WIU (5 hours) Denver - SUU (9 hours)
You play each school in your division twice a year and each school in the other division once a year, rotating home/away each year. So for instance, you guys would only have to make the dreaded SUU-Denver roadtrip every other year and would be able to bus to all your East Division games.
In a perfect world we would drop SUU and add someone more in the midwest and/or heartland area. With the rumored shakeup of all the conferences it will be interesting to see how that affects the Summit. Maybe a Horizon, Ohio Valley or even Mo Valley school or two will fall in our lap.

So lemme get this straight...the Horizon is a step down? I'm not following. I put this blog post on my Panther fan website a couple days ago. www.pantheru.com/notes/In_LeCrone's_Shoes Basically, I want Oakland in the conference. Cutting YSU and adding Oakland gives us equal representation: 2 in Wisconsin, 2 in Illinois, 2 in Indiana, 2 in Ohio, 2 in Michigan. Personally, I want to go further. I think the future of the conference is safe if we can keep Butler, and to keep Butler we need to cut the fat (YSU) and pursue higher profile schools and perhaps low-majors that are underappreciated in their own leagues and are underperforming because of competition. Your attendance is around that of most Horizon League schools, but I believe it would boost with the close proximity rivalry with Detroit and cutting out ridiculous conference trips to the Dakotas, Louisiana (out anyways) and Utah. Not to mention that the move up means a renewed rivalry with Valpo. It makes too much sense for OU not to do it. My concern is telling Detroit to leave it alone and let you in.

I definitely agree with blackpanthermke that if Oakland was able to get into the Horizon, with the natural geographic rivalries that would be fostered, attendance at the O'Rena would go through the roof.

Blackpantermke, that was a really good read. It will be interesting to see how expansion impacts the smaller leagues, especially one like the Horizon. My hope is that the true basketball leagues come out unscathed.

I don't think he meant the Horizon is a step down. Quite the opposite. He says that it would be our ideal scenario (especially in regards to travel) but can understand why we would want to play in a lesser league (Summit) at this time due to having an easier path to the NCAA's. That's my take at least.

I can understand that. I do feel, however, in a Horizon + OU - YSU, the Grizzlies (or any other team for that matter) don't have to win the conference tournament to get in.

Not to further stoke the flames of conference realignment, but the zeitgeist of college athletics will no doubt gravitate toward shifting conference every off-season, and after what happened in October and November, it seems that during the season teams are not immune from these talks either. The HL's RTC contributor wrote on a Horizon League sans Youngstown, and of course said that would mean an invitation to OU in his eyes. rushthecourt.net/2011/02/04/checking-in-on-the-horizon-league-24/Hopefully U of D will eventually be forward thinking enough to support our entrance. That would be mutually beneficial, without a doubt.

With rumors that the rivalry will be rekindled next year, that would be a huge step in gaining UDM's approval in joining the Horizon. That is, assuming all goes well.
