Officially, it is 3,000. But we all know that there have been games far above that. Biggest crowd ever was over 4,000. I really don't know how its 3,000. A few years ago, it stated the capacity as 4,000. Then all of a sudden its 3,000? We had plenty of games last year with crowds over 3,000 and it wasn't a sell out. When it was originally built the "official" capacity was 3000. Now obviously we have had crowds much larger than that on several occasions that the athletic dept would mark down 4000 on the webpages.

The Greg Kampe show is returning on WXOU today after a few weeks off at 3:00pm (wxou.org). It has been really good so far this season and there will be lots for the hosts to chat with him about.

Coach Kampe had a great discussion today on the radio show. The best part was when he compared Will Hudson's rebounding to the way his dog greets people who ring his doorbell. Not kidding: I use the story that I have a dog. Every time the doorbell rings my dog runs to the front door to say "Hi" to the person who rang the doorbell. In all the time I've had the dog, it's never been for him. The person that came to the door has never come to the door to see my dog. But that doesn't stop my dog. Every time it rings, he goes. And that's how Will rebounds. Every shot goes up, he goes to the boards. Even if it's not going to come off on his side, if it appears its going in, if its a lay-up, he goes every time, and he's rewarded for that. We want him to rebound like my dog. Wrote a quick post about it but the meat is in that quote: grizzliesgameplan.blogspot.com/2011/01/will-hudson-rebounds-like-dog.html

Gotta love Kampe. I tuned in late and missed that. I heard him refer to his dog later in the show and wondered what he meant.

Going back a bit in the conversation; I was giving a campus tour to some 8th graders who were here to see a show at Meadowbrook and I always try to bring them into the Orena (just the concourse) because they absolutely love seeing a real college basketball arena. One of the students asked how many it holds and I responded with 4,000. A lady who works for athletics was walking by and said "actually it is 3,000." I asked her how it could be 3,000 when we have had games with well over 3,000 on multiple occasions since I have been a student here. She said "standing room."
Obviously we all know there aren't hundreds standing, so we know she is completely out of touch with actual games. She most likely has a job which does not require her to be at games. But why would athletics underplay the size of the arena? Wouldn't you think it would be the opposite? Or are we trying to inflate the percentage of full seats at games?

Seems like there was some official decision to stop listing 4,005 as the capacity a few years ago, which is definitely what it used to be. I don't know why the figure of 3,000 was chosen, other than the fact that it is a nice round number.
I think dantheman is probably right, that they're underselling the size of the O'Rena to claim a higher percentage of seats filled. That might give Tracy Huth and company more ammunition to make the case for a major expansion (or new arena) sooner rather than later.

Keep in mind that actual attendance figures also are able to include include teams, referees, bands, cheerleaders, staff, and anyone else in the building. Attendance does not mean paid attendance, and OU certainly isn't massaging the numbers too much.

Even considering that the figure still seems low. It is even more shady considering that now too long ago our "official" capacity was listed as 4,000 (I believe it was officially 4,005).
It's no big, just kind of strange.

Coach Kampe's rebounding dog story is a classic ... I have a dog who races to the front door every time the door bell rings ... he's so excited no matter whether it's a well-known neighbor ... a new guest to sniff ... or the FedEx driver.
