I feel for you guys. To be honest, at this point I was pulling for you to go the distance. It would have been a remarkable record, and you really would have earned it.
I'm familiar with two of the three officials that called your game last night - total jerks. Don't know that they are any worse than the crew we had last night, though. Where does the league find these guys?
It's pretty common for star players to get a little "protection" from the officials - it's to everyone's benefit to keep these guys in the game. I've felt that Benson has gotten a little of that in Oakland's games against ORU. I also felt like, back in the day, that Caleb Green got it as well. Obviously, the refs last night felt otherwise. From what I've read, it's almost like they were out to take you guys down. That's really too bad. As I was telling a friend last night, though, when you're making a run at going undefeated, that monkey on your back gets heavier with every game. The ORU women's team is facing the same thing. It's just tough to run the table.
Best of luck from here on out. You guys are a lock on the #1 seed in conference, and very likely an NCAA tournament team. Still a very rewarding season for you.

For the first time as a proud Grizzly fan, I can't wait to get out of this 2nd rate basketball league known as the Summit League. The amount of touchy, ticky tack fouls we've seen this year and this game in particular is embarrassing. You know when a player is in only 18 minutes and fouls out with 9 minutes left in the game, something is horribly wrong.
If Kito was playing in the Big Ten he'd be averaging 26 points a game and 2 or 3 fouls a game tops because in leagues like the Big Ten, the Big East, or the leagues with all of the best players and teams, they let the players play. Kito was completely made invisible in the 1st half by the refs and when he finally came back in the 2nd half, he couldn't even jump to block a shot without the fear of picking up a foul. His 5th foul was one of the cleanest things I've seen and was ridiculous at best.
And that Reggie Hamilton charge with about a minute left in the game when the Grizzlies were down 3?? Wow .

Thanks tmh. I figured it would be very difficult to go undefeated and there is a reason why so few have been able to do it. A positive that I previously mentioned is that this will get the guys to refocus (just like last year when losing to this same team) now that the pressure to run the table is off. I still think that ORU will be the tougher of the two teams (ORU, IUPUI) that we will face in Sioux Falls thought I would really love to stick it to the Jags once more.

I've been looking at some of the advanced stats from this game and comparing to the season and must say that it is looking like this was the most unfair distribution of fouls/free throws Oakland has faced...maybe ever in modern times. I'm saving the bulk of this stuff for my recap post for tomorrow, but basically when you look at free throw rate, Oakland had a 9.5% rate against IUPUI when they average around 44% for the season. Also the only other time Oakland was under 20% was against Ohio State - and that was 19.5%. And OSU is one of the best teams in the country at limiting their fouls. Now IUPUI doesn't foul a lot, but that is just incredible. Then you look and IUPUI had a 54% FT rate in this game which is far and away the highest on the season against Oakland. Incredible.

I've always believed that Summit League officials try hard to keep fouls fairly even.
Clearly was not the case last night. They seemingly ignored the discrepancy completely.
Also, I saw that Garry made a comment about Jerry Sauder, one of the officials last night. There are statistics out there tracking the number of calls each official makes on average. Sauder called the most of any referee that worked 3 or more Oakland games last season.

Here's a funny story about Jerry Sauder that I'm not particularly proud of - it was actually during the game against Oakland at Mabee Center, so you guys might remember it.
Mid-way through the second half Kyron Stokes gets the ball, then attempts a no-look bullet-pass to . . . no one. The ball hit Jerry Sauder right on the side of that shaved head of his and caromed out of bounds. That had to have hurt a great deal.
Our crowd, already frustrated at the officials for a 9-1 foul disparity favoring Oakland, cheered - loudly! I confess, I was cheering as loud as anyone.
Almost immediately I felt guilty for applauding his calamity. Would have apologized if I could have. Didn't seem to upset Jerry too much, though. He went on like nothing happened.

Ask Saddi about Jerry Sauder. In 1998, WMU was playing at Toledo. That was the year WMU was an at-large team in the NCAAs. Sauder was doing the game (I'll never forget his bald head). The game had a similar feel to it as the OU/IUPUI game. WMU entered the game 12-4 while Toledo was 11-6. He was calling EVERYTHING against WMU. The Broncos were down big at the half, but made bucket-after-bucket down the stretch to overcome the horrendous officiating. Toledo ended up attempting 44 FTs and WMU 30. Saddi ended the game with 32 points on 10-19 shooting. statsheet.com/mcb/games/1998/01/24/western-michigan-90-toledo-89If anyone ever sees Sauder doing another game, let me know, and I'll lay down big money on the home team.

B&G ... a good read. Thanks for posting the first-person observations and photos.
