My only issue with it is they talk about wanting to get an on campus arena, which really means they want to be a member of the CCHA where it's a requirement. While that's not a bad thing, is a hockey arena and joining the CCHA really a pressing need at OU right now?

Not right now but it is worth keeping an eye on especially with Penn State adding hockey and the potential for a Big 10 hockey conference to splinter away from CCHA.

Personally, I don't like the idea of adding hockey as an official varsity sport anytime soon.
While it'd be a nice addition in the long-term, I'd rather see us get adequate funding for our current sports (or drop some underfunded sports) - including making some much-needed improvements to our facilities - before we add more sports to the mix.
Once we've got some improved facilities for baseball, softball, soccer, etc., and shoot - how about facilities in general for track & field and tennis - then I think that adding sports would be a good idea. The infrastructure doesn't exist just yet.

I agree for the most part. Given our current funding, there's no question that we have plenty of existing needs to take care of before adding sports.
But there are also potential donors who are interested in giving specifically to athletics. If Oakland hockey becomes more viable and visible, it might nudge certain donors toward making major gifts they might not otherwise make.

If we can grow our basketball to a butler/gonzaga like program we can possibly get money to make something like that happen. I cant see Hockey producing enough money to supply other sports revenue, so i think any money right now should go towards something with potential to make money.

I like the idea of having an on campus hockey arena further down the line, but I don't think its fair to those existing varsity sports like track & tennis to have to play their "home" games at local high schools. I know they don't bring in $, but c'mon...On the other hand, if there are donors willing to fund a hockey arena though, u pretty much can't turn it down IMO.

I think that track and field and tennis need to have facilities built on campus first. Then OU needs to improve the facilities we have before building a hockey arena.
However, I do love the possibility of having D1 hockey with a possible on campus arena.
I love the way OU is growing!

I think sportsdoc has it right. Some donors may want more credit than will come from simply helping renovate athletic offices or expand existing facilities. Having your name on a fancy new hockey arena would probably seem to give more bang for the buck. But who knows.
To be honest, though, for me the most pressing fundraising needs are academic-related (more endowed chairs, more new labs, more merit scholarships for high achieving students, etc). But as biglew says, it's good to be growing.

How about an actual music building and performance venue?
