Some of you guys may or may not remember, Matt and I did an interview with Denzel Watts, now a junior PG at Flint Carman-Ainsworth at the Selection Show last March. If you want a refresher, you can listen to it here: www.files.wxou.org/Denzel.m4a
Valentine and Denzel have gone back and forth a bit on Twitter today, and Denzel said he almost gave a verbal to Oakland today and seems to be leaning hard. He's also got offers from Baylor and Florida State and visited USC, so although Oakland was his first offer, I pretty much dismissed the idea that OU was still in the picture, but that's apparently not the case.
I had a chance to watch Denzel play against Troy Athens in January where they lost. Some of the questions on him I gathered before the game were as follows:
Willing passer, great handle but how is vision??
Is he attentive in the zone defenses?
Does he stay on his feet and not leap at pumps, etc?
Here's some of the notes that I took:
Bends knees and shoots a fluid FT. When he boards he shows good fundamentals and uses his quickness to fuel the break immediately. Hit short floater with RH. Drained a 3-pointer from wing with pretty good defense. Blew by defense left and finished. Usually able to get by defenders but angles in which he finishes at are sometimes less than ideal. Showed one great possession where he crossed into the lane, faked and drew his teammates defender up to get the dish to him. Another good pull up right-handed floater. Only recall one finish, an easy layup and-1 off a steal. Began to draw more fouls when team trailed late. Can go both right and left, and array of moves make it tough to anticipate his moves.
