Last weekend of the regular season means that the all-league teams will be revealed pretty soon. Here were the preseason picks:
First Team
Travis Bader, Oakland
Taylor Braun, North Dakota State
Ceola Clark III, Western Illinois
Frank Gaines, Fort Wayne
Terell Parks, Western Illinois
Nate Wolters, South Dakota State
Second Team
Lawrence Alexander, North Dakota State
Marshall Bjorklund, North Dakota State
Ian Chiles, IUPUI
Jordan Dykstra, South Dakota State
Drew Valentine, Oakland
Preseason Player of the Year
Nate Wolters, South Dakota State
I think the first team should be largely in tact, but how do people evaluate Taylor Braun, who missed a big chunk of Summit play with an injury? That is a tough one. I can't think of a recent example like that. Based on the whole season, including non-conference, Braun would merit inclusion. But do they limit the options to players who play a certain threshold of games? Tricky.
Here's one guess as to how it plays out:
POTY
Wolters
First Team
Bader
Braun
Clark III
Gaines
Parks
Wolters
Assumes Braun is eligible and considers his whole season.
Second Team
Jordan Dykstra, SDSU
Duke Mondy, OU
Juevol Myles, USD
Corey Petros, OU
Justin Simmons, UNO
Tough to find space on the second team with warranted players like Myles and Simmons perhaps unexpectedly in the mix. It's a stretch since they're both "new" players, and I do think there is a tendency among voters to break a virtual tie by choosing the longer-tenured player, or the player who has been in the consciousness for longer. That said, Alexander probably bumps one of those two from this list, as it could be with Bjorklund over Petros.
Honorable Mention
Lawrence Alexander, NDSU
Marshall Bjorklund, NDSU
Tony Fiegen, SDSU
Estan Tyler, UMKC
Drew Valentine, OU
Mitchell Patton from IUPUI could be considered here, but I think voters go with senior workhorses Fiegen and Valentine. TrayVonn Wright will also be a factor here perhaps.
All-Newcomer Team
Kory Brown, NDSU
Luis Jacobo, IPFW
Casey Kasperbauer, USD
Adam Link, WIU
Duke Mondy, OU
Kind of a weak freshman class this year, but Kasperbauer was probably most integral freshman scorer for a team. Brown didn't produce stats but he started all year for a great NDSU team. Rounded out by a slew of transfers.
Newcomer of the Year
Duke Mondy, OU
Defensive Player of the Year
Terell Parks, WIU
Sixth Man of the Year
Duke Mondy, OU
