New athletic director Jeff Konya sits down for his first Grizzly Bites since moving to Oakland. This is a neat update to hear about what he has already starting to work on and what he sees as the immediate steps to take (big focus on marketing and branding).

Ok. So I'm happy they're finally addressing the monster that they themselves created with the 5000 different logos (did anyone outside of athletics like that stupid O logo? ?) and I'm all for emphasizing the golden in golden grizzlies... However, "see the bear, be the bear, wear the bear" is the second worst marketing slogan I've ever heard next to "you can afford this". Are they going to actually sell new merchandise at the games now and actually sell hats with their new logo? Bookstore has 0 hats with the new logo last time I checked.

Interesting discussion with Jeff Konya, including plans to broadcast 10 basketball games on TV 20, which is now owned by local ABC affiliate Channel 7 (WXYZ):

This is great news and from what I see by getting the name and brand recognition out there will only assist in propelling our great institution/name recognition out there. Jeff Konya is an innovator and we're very fortunate that he considers Oakland University a destination spot and one in which can compete with many universities on many levels both academically and athletically. In Jeff We Trust! In Kampe We Trust! Go Golden Grizzlies! #WearTheBear

Just to clarify, ABC is owned by Disney, but WXYZ (Channel 7) and WMYD (Channel 20) are both owned by the E.W. Scripps Company.

Agreed. My point is that it's on a shared ABC network with direct access and greater potential visibility for highlights on ESPN. When I worked at NBC sports we'd use raw feeds from our entire NBC family of stations and broadcasts for highlights. This will grant Oakland more visibility and a greater chance to get HD quality video to ESPN if warranted. Regardless, it will be easier for a producer at channel 20/7 to send quality video to ESPN upon request via direct satellite feeds. Still exciting news and can't wait for the season to start.
