The women's basketball team is now 2-0 in Horizon League play after a road win over Valparaiso. They beat Milwaukee by 33 and Valparaiso by 17. Coach Tungate has the Golden Grizzlies playing solid ball thus far.
Next game is at home on Saturday vs. UIC at 4:00 p.m.

I'm glad to see the women's team off to such a great start in Horizon League play. They had a couple of tough losses after Christmas at Central Michigan and Dartmouth, both of which were close and very winnable games. The Dartmouth loss was especially tough because Oakland was only 6-17 from the free throw line.
I'm thrilled to see them off to such a great start in the conference, and I think Coach Tungate and his staff are doing an excellent job. The team works really well together and seems to be learning and improving with each game. They have several different players who could be player of the game any given night, and it's nice to see different players step up as necessary. They're also a fairly young team, so the future looks bright for them. I'll be at the O'rena cheering for them on Saturday.

The Golden Grizzlies finish strong and come back from 11 down in the second half to beat Green Bay 70-67, handing the Phoenix their first home loss and league loss of the season. The ladies played great, and this game shows what they're capable of. The players and coaching staff have been working very hard, and it's paying off.

The women play in the Horizon League tournament at Wright State tonight at 7:00. The game should be on ESPN3. Wright State is the #2 seed (we're the #7 seed) and has a very good team. But we beat Green Bay at Green Bay this season so an upset against Wright State is definitely a possibility.
The women's tournament has a different format than the men's tournament, as the #8 and #9 seeds play a play-in game, then those eight teams all play based on seeding (#1 vs. #8/9, #2 vs. #7, etc.). No double byes. The higher seeds host the first round games, and the highest remaining seed then hosts the final two rounds. No moving the finals if the host loses in the semifinals.

Women getting smoked at the half. Yikes. 29-54. The women's team has made huge strides under Tungate. But still some ways to go too.
