We have our first 2017 commit: James Beck, a 6'7" forward out of Grand Rapids Christian. Looking at video on Youtube, this kid has some really good moves within 10 feet, and the hustle to go with it, but I've yet to see any evidence of ability away from the basket. I hope he grows another inch or two because he'll probably be playing alot of power forward in our offense. www.freep.com/story/sports/college/2016/08/12/oakland-basketball-james-beck/88638532/

Will be interesting to see how much he develops and improves his game within the next year.

I had a chance to go see James Beck and the Grand Rapids Christian team beat Romulus in the Class A semifinals at Breslin today. Beck led the way with 24 points (11 of 17 shooting) and 9 rebounds. Romulus was undersized and GRC really took advantage of that, pounding it in the post to Beck and Beck getting a few nice putbacks. I didn't see him work outside the painted area in this game, and could easily see Beck sliding into the Jalen Hayes role for Oakland in a few years. He has a nice touch around the rim. He "quitely" got his points too. He doesn't seem to be a "rah-rah" guy, just a worker.
GRC will play Clarkston on Saturday at Noon for the state title. Lot of D-I talent in this game. Beck and Xavier Tillman (MSU) on GRC, and Foster Loyer (MSU) and Dylan Alderson (Milwaukee) on Clarkton. The GRC point guard Duane Washington is also getting DI offers, so it should be a great game.
Really great atmosphere in the Breslin Center today from the Grand Rapids Christian and Clarkston crowds. Should be a good one tomorrow. I think it will air live on Fox Sports Detroit+ at Noon.
It would be great for our guy to enter the program as a state champ!

Glad to see he performed well, sad to see Romulus got destroyed. I was really proud of Romulus for making it so far with no real stand out talent and no college recruits.

My alma mater in Clarkstin takes down Beck and GRC. Foster Loyer is just really really good.

I can't believe that was only Fife's first state championship.
oudrummer was retweeting a bunch of comments about how good a signing Beck is. Exciting!

Fife and Clarkston in general have a knack for choking in championship games or playoffs in general. Football broke that streak a few years ago now it was finally basketballs turn. Too bad they couldn't do it a few years ago when Press Kampe when was the pg. He was the last starting pg at Clarkston before Loyer. Loved basketball so much he's working on becoming a professional drummer at one of the top colleges in the US. But anyway...
Anyone watch the finals? Was Beck kinda quiet? For all the praise getting into the finals didn't say anything about his play in the final game.

For all the praise getting into the finals didn't say anything about his play in the final game. Yes he was very quiet. Didn't touch the ball too much, as compared to the previous game when he scored 24 points. It looked like for long stretches GRC tried to match Clarkston's guard play instead of impose their will, which they simply couldn't. So not Beck's best game, but he did have a couple stellar defensive plays that got me excited.
