HL Scores (1/27/17)
With the HOT MESS that OU is right now. All we can do is just try to finish out the regular season by getting better and try to finish in the top half of the standings (which isn't saying much) and get ready for the HL Tourney at the Joe.
Valpo 70
Wright State 55 (Just hand the HL title to F&*king Valpo once again)
Northern Kentucky 79
UIC 62
Milwaukee 73
Detroit-Mercy 69 (OT)
I'm sure Milwaukee will come in fired up ready to complete the Michigan sweep.

HL Scores (1/29/17)
Green Bay getting upset by Mercy helps OU's chances of at least getting second (albeit, we still have a lot to do to accomplish that). One game behind Green Bay now. The guys have a big week ahead with YSU and Cleveland State coming up while Green Bay has UIC and Valpo to deal with even though they will be facing them at home.

HL Scores (2/4/17)
Big day in the Horizon. Valpo losing big to Green Bay is huge for us. Not that I expected them to go through the league with only one loss but they were due to lose one. It was just Green Bay's day. If OU can knock off Valpo on the 17th it may make things very "interesting". Big "revenge" game next Friday night in Calihan.

Youngstown State 80
UIC 105

This post is a handful of thoughts and observations about UIC after our game with the Flames. I went into the game really wanting to learn more about all of their young players because I think we'll be hearing a lot more from them in the coming years, and to date all of those young guys just kind of run together. Then as they were playing I realized they all run together because that is what Coach McClain is looking for: interchangeable guards. Check out this quote from a recent article:
He certainly has a lot of options at guard and it sounds like he wants more. What struck me about his young players is they are all hitting the three at a great clip for freshmen. Ferguson is shooting 38%, Matthews 38%, Ottey 37%, and Boahen 46%. Add in 6-8 Santos who is shooting 36% and that is a lot of fire power from deep.
Even with the best three-point shooting in league play so far, UIC still has one of the worst offenses due to turnovers and shooting inside the arc. I think we will see them improve on both of those as those guys get experience, get stronger, get used to finishing against physicality. And of course Dikembe Dixon will return next year, and he had made a big jump in his efficiency in his early play as a sophomore.
The only thing that could damper the offensive improvement is if none of the guards prove to be an effective lead guard, leading to turnovers with the fast-paced offense. I am not sure how much Coach McClain is using his time at Indiana as an influence, but he is certainly playing faster than his Wyoming teams did and the four-guard line-up is something Tom Crean has run a fair amount of at Indiana. When Indiana has been really good, they've had a solid point guard to run the show, tons of great shooters, and usually one great big man on the inside. Coach Crean's offenses are a thing of beauty when they are really rolling, and many of those occurred while McClain was there. This year without a great point guard, Indiana is really struggling with turnovers even though they have experienced guards. So that is something I'll be watching with UIC.
With a largely freshman line-up, McClain has UIC respectably in the middle of the conference on defense in points per possession. Again, I'd expect that to improve as those guys get older too.
I look forward to seeing what UIC does in the coming years. Of course, I hope Oakland beats them, but I have heard around the league UIC has been thought of as a bit of a "sleeping giant" in the Horizon due to its city, recruiting base, facilities, etc.
One more interesting anecdote I saw to show you never know how things will pan out:
That is a great stat for UIC and indicative of the young talent they have this year, but it's interesting to note the last time that happened, only one player of the three that received the award really contributed much after that year. UIC would obviously love if any one of their three became as great as Peters, but Yeo transferred after that year and Williams suffered an injury that changed the trajectory he seemed to be on. So you just never know.
