While some improvements were seen in the second half, the out of the gate trend is quite bad. A team with no real bigs and consistently poor shooting is a bad recipe moving forward. What bothers me most is that this start *could* have been predicted months ago. It was a distinct possibility given this roster. As such, the coaching staff needed to develop some kind of counter strategy in the months prior. Whatever was conceived does not work. Once again, it is not unfair to expect more out of this program at this point.

They need to start the season playing teams on par with their level. It's hard to implement your offense or defense if you are 20 to 30 points out early. Run your program against equal level and iron out the wrinkles. That will build confidence in the system and they would have more success.

Run your program against equal level and iron out the wrinkles. That will build confidence in the system and they would have more success. Non-conference schedules are often built years in advance. The BGSU, OK State, and Toledo games are all part of multi year agreements that have been in place for years now. That at least explains these games to start this season and why it may be difficult to adjust the schedule on the fly, especially in the transfer portal era where your schedule could be set in March/April only to lose key pieces in the off-season. But in general, except for a few years when Konya usurped Kampe’s scheduling philosophy, Oakland will always schedule up in the non-conference under Kampe. It’s a bedrock principle of his program. I happen to like it that way and agree with the approach, and believe the conference season results have borne that out more often than not.
