Really good article and a nice summarization of the past 5+ years in both men’s and women’s basketball. If the average fan or sports writer is picking up on the injury history or the limited bench, that surely means opposing coaches see the same thing. Just wear Oakland down and they will falter at the end - see last year’s HL tournament game at WSU.
Yes, facilities and brand image concerns are valid. At some point the Athletics Department needs to behave like a D1 program. However, I would not paint the entire department with such a broad brush given their long history of winning the McCafferty Cup.

I know this is a basketball centric article, but I do give Waterfield credit for making 2 terrific hires. Baseball and softball. If they can continue to improve and perform as they did the last 2 seasons, that would be monumental. Especially baseball which has been at the bottom of the standings forever. I’m sure Waterfield prioritized that new expensive turf field along with the other modest improvements.
I liked Konya for all the reasons you mentioned, but he jumps ship at every stop he’s made which hurts the direction and momentum of mid majors. If I recall, the only major improvements he made were the scoreboard and speakers? Not sure if the speakers are bad or the recordings. I’ll defer to Matt on that.
