Apparently, we had a player named Dominic Capriotti this year? I don't remember him either, but he allegedly transferred out yesterday. *shrug* I thought he was a redshirt this past season. Either way, he won't be here next year. I wish him the best wherever he goes.

Isaiah Jones. Not highly recruited out of high school, didn't do much to stand out at UDM. He'll be a fine depth player, but the big appeal with this one seems to be the fun of stealing him from the Titans.

If he is interested, he seems long enough to defend in the zone & cause problems for opponents. But looking at his stats from a bad UDM team, I feel less optimistic. We will find out.

Now we're dipping into the D2 transfer market. That's risky at best. It's hard to understand why, when there are so many D1 transfers in the portal already. The kid seems to be a strong shooter, but it's a major adjustment between the 2 levels.

The kid seems to be a strong shooter, but it's a major adjustment between the 2 levels. I agree, to me, this roster could use at least 1 if not 2 more impact scoring options. I think Kampe has done a fair job at adding size in the portal, which was a glaring issue most of last year. Adding Aundre Polk (6'10") who I would think should be able to score at a pretty decent rate and Isaiah Jones (6'8") who should provide some depth and size off the bench appear to be somewhat solid acquisitions to address that. He's added the heir apparent point guard to Jalen Moore in Tone Hunter, who Oakland was in on last season before he chose to play at Long Beach State, so he appeared to be a top portal target this off-season. Based on the long history of productive and successful point guards in Kampe's system at Oakland it's somewhat safe to assume Tone Hunter has the potential to become an immediate impact scoring option. Two question mark adds are D'Quarian Cole and Jack Gohlke, one being a JUCO transfer and the latter a DII transfer. Their numbers would allude to them both being prolific shooters at their previous levels but not exactly sure if that will translate to D1 and if they are expected to be anymore than depth pieces off the bench. To round out the off-season, I would like to see another impact big man and/or a legit scoring wing option to finish off this roster. Adding a little more juice and excitement going into next season along with making this team a legitimate contender at a Horizon League Championship. There's currently a couple notable big men in the transfer portal, Mouhamadou Cisse (Saint Louis) who some may remember was a shocking commit to Oakland last summer before he decommitted only a week after and there's also Mohamed Diarra (Missouri), a JUCO transfer last season who was targeted by Oakland and former JUCO teammate with Tone Hunter. Maybe one of them will reconsider attending Oakland after being recruited in the past, a trend that has started the last few years. I know I would take either in a heartbeat.

With the new guards, I could see around December or January when they may struggle and Kampe explaining how difficult the system is. Especially for new players. Hopefully Watts & Bowman are back and have great seasons. Along with Lampman & Price. Which would reduce the need for instant success from the new guards. I'm curious about seing Polk. He did well before in the MAC.

While YSU was led by a Dayton transfer last year, the rest of their big transfers came from lower level Division I leagues or at least equal leagues (including one intra-league transfer). The starting PG for Northern Kentucky last year was a Division II transfer. Farleigh Dickinson, in its 16-over-1 upset of Purdue, was lead by three Division II transfers. Just a couple anecdotal references showing there are good players everywhere if you can find them.
The COVID year and the portal has made roster building weird. Not all of them will hit, but I much prefer the route the staff is taking with bringing in more experienced transfers from any level, than a bunch of HS recruits who will ride the pine for a year or two max and then depart. The upside is better for a 23 year old coming in from a lower level (juco or DII) in my view. At the very least should be more competition to push both returners and newcomers building the depth that is needed.

The most successful transfer we've had in recent time came from JUCO. No problem focusing on players to bring in who excel in lower levels rather than mediocre to floundering D1 guys.

So, has JUCO and the transfer portal replaced high school recruiting? I wonder what the percentages spent on each is?
