Last night's exhibition game had to be one of, if not the most underwhelming and uninspired performances I've seen by an Oakland team especially home at the O'Rena. Very puzzled on how the team could come out that flat and seem hesitant for long stretches considering they had already played three exhibition games on their Italy trip in the summer. Not sure what to even really take out of that game as the team just looked very out of sorts right from the tip. None of the newcomers burst on to the scene at all:
-Jack Gohlke made 5 3's, but took 14 shots to do it (Still expect him to be a prolific 3-point shooter, but efficiency still in question) -D.Q. Cole had some flashes of good play but doesn't seem ready to be a starter on this team and often seemed timid on the offense end of the floor along with not being very aggressive -Tone Hunter showed potential for some spurts, but played out of control at times making quite a few mistakes (Not sure if he's ready to be the starting PG yet) -Aundre Polk only playing 3 minutes was puzzling, not sure if he was injured -Isaiah Jones was pretty much a non factor in his 10 minutes

At best, we saw some flashes but nothing substantial. Overall, one of the most apathetic looking teams I've ever seen take the floor. As for Polk, IIRC he shot a three, missed, was pulled and didn't see the floor again. Could be a long season.

Unfortunately this is the state of the program. The squad with X and Brechting in their last year was the last time I saw a team as a whole with passion for this team and university. This is to be expected when 3/4 of the team is new on a yearly basis. In order for good players to form a good team they need to play for each other first, the coach second, the school third then themselves. I haven't seen this in a number of seasons.

Not sure I agree with Toad. 2 years ago we won 20 games with J Cain. We were 9-1 in league when Jalen Moore torn a ligament in his shooting wrist. That team played with passion. Cain was fun to watch. I do agree with when you have so many new players every year it can create this vib we saw the other night. I'm hoping this is just a early season game that didn't count and not the norm. Time will tell.

Any Kampe defenders left out there? I'm not trolling, just genuinely curious.

I like Kampe and still think he is a bargain. There are bigger issues with athletics with NIL and facilities (hopefully getting better soon).
One thing I don’t understand is the decision not to prepare for the exhibition games. I’m not sure that tactic works with kids these days. We saw the same situation with the game against RU last year. Maybe he is trying to identify the leaders on the team? It’s tough with the turnover.

Getting Buru Naivalurua eligible as soon as possible if at all this season is going to be a huge factor in this team's trajectory this season, as he was regarded as their top offseason acquisition and seems like should be a difference maker both offensively as another scoring option and in the rebounding department. Blake Lampman getting healthy and on the court is also huge as he obviously not only gives them another perimeter shooting threat to go along with Gohlke but on the defensive end he provides more value than most give him credit for, especially at creating turnovers. Will be interesting to see what improvements and adjustments are made in Monday's exhibition game against Wayne St. and also the allotment of minutes.

Those will be additions, Lampan definitely, as we have seen him produce and develop over the years. I think he works that zone very well, and is one of the best defenders that we have. Of course he is one of the better 3 point shooters that we have too. He can do some of everything from the guard/wing spots. Even missing them, we still should not have lost to a D2 team. That really does not sit well with me. I hope Kampe is actually game-planning for Wayne State. Athletes are competitive, I'm sure all of the D2 teams that we play get some level of excitement to play against D1 players. Some may have something to 'prove.' This is a local game, people will remember if we lose to Wayne St. Just like we remember them beating UDM recently.
