Using KenPom's offensive and defensive efficiency ratings to come to an "efficiency margin" (offensive - defensive), here are the top 8 ranked by efficiency margin (the last column). This can be compared to the historical average efficiency margin of all seeds in the HL since 2002-03 (the second to last column). Some other insights from this data set: Last 10 Years -1-seed has won the tournament twice --2014-15 - Valparaiso --2020-21 - Cleveland State -Average efficiency margin of 1-seed: 11.8 -Oakland's 8.5 is third lowest of 1-seeds -2020-21 Cleveland State (5.3) was lowest of 1-seed and they won Average efficiency margin of 1-seed (since 2002-03): 12.3 Last 10 Years -2-seed has won the tournament three times --2017-18 - Wright State --2018-19 - NKU --2019-20 - NKU -Average efficiency margin of 2-seed: 11.2 -YSU's 14.3 is second highest of 2-seeds Average efficiency margin of 2-seed (since 2002-03): 11.3 Basically, there has historically been little difference between the two top teams in league play, followed by a big jump to the third place team. For Oakland's upcoming game against PFW, some very interested trends for the 8-seed: 8 Seed Data - PFW is first 8 seed since 2002-03 that has a winning record in league play - Average efficiency margin of 8-seed since 2002-03: -4.8 - Average efficiency margin of 8-seed last 10 years: -2.5 - Average efficiency margin of 8-seed since 2018-19: 0.8 - Average win percentage of 8-seed since 2002-03: .3502 - Average win percentage of 8-seed last 10 years: .3733 - Average win percentage of 8-seed since 2018-19: .4360 The 20+ year data is not as helpful these days. The league was a 9-team league for quite some time, so the 8 seed was historically pretty bad. With 11 or 12 teams, the 8 seed is no longer quite as bad. One can see this in the 20+ year, 10 year, and 6 year winning percentage and efficiency margin trends. The 8-seed is getting better and better, culminating this year with PFW being the best 8-seed in the KenPom-era history of the league, both by win percentage and efficiency margin, and probably also a more subjective standard of the eye test. That said, I suspect we'll see a continuing trend where a 7 or 8 seed continues to be more like this year's solid CSU and PFW teams with the league's depth. If the League is serious about giving its top 2 teams as strong of an advantage as possible come tournament time, it may want to revisit sending the top 2 directly to the semis a la the West Coast Conference. The data supports that the 1-8 and 2-7 games are far more competitive than even 7 years ago.

Oakland U is favored by 3.5 tonight against PFW at home. I figure it’s a toss up. As blackandgold explains so well above, the No. 8 seed is no patsy in today's Horizon League.
These teams split the season series with PFW winning on our floor back in December on a night when the Dons shot 65% from the three. Coach Kampe has called it one of the best offensive performances he's ever witnessed by an opponent in the O'rena.
A bit of March Madness history: Oakland is 7-10 overall in the HL tournament. Coach Kampe’s team reached the championship game with Jalen Moore in 2021 — the COVID year.
Many of us have shared in some memorable moments of disappointment since Oakland joined the Horizon League for the 2013-2014 season.
Remember that first-round loss to Illinois-Chicago when we all drove to Valpo in March 2015? Whew. Personally, that was one of the most disappointing losses ever. Oakland had crushed UIC by 25 a week earlier.
Remember that one-point quarterfinal loss to Youngstown 81-80 at Joe Louis in 2017? That was the first of three straight March Madness games when the Golden Grizzlies were eliminated from the tournament by one-point margins.
Kendrick Nunn had the ball in his hands in the final seconds but missed the shot when Oakland fell to Cleveland State, 44-43, in March 2018. In that game, Oakland shot 25% from the floor.
I recall, all too well, March 2019 when Northern Kentucky knocked out the Cumberland-Hill-Mais-Norris team 64-63 on a buzzer beater by Drew McDonald at Little Caesars.
Ten HL seasons with Jalen Hayes, Kay Felder, Martez Walker, Kendrick Nunn, Jamal Cain, Xavier Hill-Mais, Jalen Moore, and no tournament titles.
We're due. I believe.

Yes, we are due. Kampe and Oakland fans have been dreaming about this opportunity. It is pretty simple: Keep PFW from making easy 3s, especially in the beginning. Have the crowd in their face and take full advantage of home court. Use the bench, don’t rely on a few players. It won’t be easy, but when is it?
Yes, it is difficult to win the HL tournament, but WSU and NKU have each had their successes. Time for Oakland to get their share.
