2010 recruitment at a slower pace

Last August saw mid-major big men like John Hoskins and Matt Balkema make commitments, as well as an early call from Keith Appling. More had already committed in July. The future Mr. Basketball, Appling's Pershing teammate Derrick Nix, already had committed to the Spartans. Heck, even Lake Superior State had two commitments at that point.
It's slower this time around. Fast forward a year, and Appling and now Eaton Rapids' Alex Gauna are the only members of the upper echelon of the 2010 class to have committed, both to Michigan State. MSU is also on the list of high-enders like Mount Pleasant's Trey Zeigler and Grand Ledge's Jon Horford. Horford is also being recruited by Alabama, Florida and Kentucky; for Zeigler, Michigan, CMU, Arizona, Arizona State, LSU and Pittsburgh.
The only two commitments thus far in August have been Utica Eisenhower's Corey Petros to Oakland and Birmingham Seaholm's Richaud Pack to Florida International.
Central Michigan, where Zeigler's dad, Ernie, is the head coach, has a long-standing commitment from Cleveland guard Derek Jackson, and is awaiting its first in-state pledge. Besides Trey Zeigler, Chippewas have offers to in-staters Cole Darling of Holt, Colin Voss of East Grand Rapids, Nate VanArendonk of Grand Haven and Devon Long of Detroit Crockett (although Darling, the state's No. 1 forward in 2010, has reportedly narrowed his list down to Oakland and Wright State). Sans Trey, all of those players stand 6-7 or taller, but the Chips are also looking for a scoring combo guard in that class.
With Oakland still alive with Darling, the Grizzlies may be ahead of the other Michigan mid-majors in recruiting homegrown talent. They already have the commitment from Petros, the No. 2 center in 2010, and are in the running for the No. 2 point guard, Arthur Hill's Maurice Jones.
