Country Day guard/McDonald's All-American Ray McCallum, Jr is set to make his college choice tomorrow, National Signing Day (according to a few newspapers). His dad is the coach of University of Detroit, which is one of his final schools amongst UCLA, Arizona, and Florida. Big day for the future of UofD if they get him.

I'm definitely hoping that the Titans land Ray Jr. And while I don't care quite as much about the Chips, it would be nice to see Trey Zeigler wind up at CMU. Here's hoping for a major resurgence of mid-major basketball in the state of Michigan!

It's official: McCallum, Jr to Detroit. With news that Gordon Hayward is putting his name in the draft (no agent), this could potentially change the landscape of the Horizon League.
Ziegler also commits to his dad at Central Michigan.
Hope these teams can be solid, but also that it doesn't hurt OU's in-state recruiting.

We don't stick around the Detroit area all the time like UofD does. Lansing has been very good to us lately and I am glad we have been making inroads in other states. As far as Ray Jr and Trey go best of luck to them both. I don't think anyone should be completely shocked considering all the talk the past several months about them possibly committing to play for Dad. However, UofD has had solid talent the past couple of seasons and has done little to show for it. They won 20 games this past season playing a fairly soft schedule so I will take a wait and see approach regarding them. The UofD-Butler game the next few seasons should be fun.

Analysis on the potential impact of McCallum and Zeigler: rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/blog/the_dagger/post/Can-Zeigler-or-McCallum-make-a-Stephen-Curry-lik?urn=ncaab,234352 As a fan of mid-majors, I am obviously happy these schools landed some top-notch talent. On the other hand, I am also realistic in knowing that the run Butler made this year will likely never be duplicated especially with 96. For all the people saying Gonzaga is the program to model, they have never even been as far as Butler. In my mind, these guys saying that Butler proved you can go to a small school and still be a national power is a bit of a joke. Yes, it proved it can be done. But odds are the Final Four next year and the year after will be four powerhouse schools from conferences who have games on ESPN four nights a week and on CBS on Saturdays. I hate to take the pessimistic route here as I am completely happy going to a school where winning the conference season and tournament is an incredibly big deal and makes most of our fanbase feel the same way, but I am just skeptical and wish they'd just say they wanted to play for their dads, get a good education, and hopefully make their programs a little better in the process. I'll also acknowledge this article and others are really playing up the Butler-NCAA-tournament thing quite a bit in talking about Ray Jr and Trey so it's not all on them...I'm just sayin'.

Here's an article from ESPN's Eammon Brennan on the issue I raised in the preceding post: espn.go.com/blog/collegebasketballnation/post/_/id/10624/on-signing-day-its-good-to-be-dadHere's a sampling: The question is whether that's the right strategy for the players. Sure, it's selfless. Some selflessness is great. But since when should college basketball players with potential NBA futures be entirely selfless? There's an NBA out there, and it would stand to reason that playing somewhere high-profile like Kansas or Kentucky would increase your odds of getting drafted at a exponential rate compared to, say, Mt. Pleasant, Mich. If nothing else, UofD and CMU are getting some major coverage on the blog circuit right now.

If you look at their recruiting, they are actually recruiting more at a national level now. They brought in a red shirt freshman last year that was North Caroline. They brought in two high quality players this year, one from Indiana and one from St Louis. They brought in two JuCo's this year, one from Florida, I think. The other played at Jackson CC , but was originally from out east somewhere.
