I thought I'd start a thread for all the random times Oakland University is mentioned in everyday life. For example, two things have occurred in my life recently.
One was a job interview in Missouri. Though my foot was in the door more because of my grad school, I always make a point to stress hard that I am an Oakland graduate first and foremost, and upon describing the school, one of the interviewers interjected, "Oh you guys had a great basketball team this year, right?". Always brings a smile to my face.
Second, I am now living in St. Louis for the summer because I got said job. The other week I was at an auto parts store inquiring about a part, and somehow the staff member and I start chatting, and he mentions he is from Royal Oak. Amazed, I quickly pointed to my Oakland t-shirt and asked, "Are you familiar with Oakland U?," to which he responded, "My brother graduated from there!"
Does this stuff ever happen to you all? Who knows if it is worth sharing here, but given that "Oakland University" still isn't a "household name," I revel in any chance to talk about it or meet people who have something to say about it.

A good portion of my family and friends graduated from OU myself included. That said it is always great to hear stories like that from various cities across the US. The school is steadly increasing in recognition.

Great topic. I was in San Francisco recently and was expecting to have to explain to people I met that my Oakland gear was not referring to nearby Oakland, CA. Several people knew immediately that OU was in Michigan (several didn't), and a couple of them said they had picked us as a first round tourney upset. Another said someone in his family had applied to the new med school. Small world. Always nice to hear Oakland mentioned outside of the state.

Thought this was quite crazy...The SDSU beat writer and all-around great resource on the Summit League, Terry Vandrovec, Tweeted out this tonight: "The kid who is giving my daughter swimming lessons has a big @ougrizzlies tattoo on his back. You don't see that every day in SoDak." Former swim team member, perhaps? Super rad sighting.
Also, my own anecdote. Living in Cincinnati now and recently saw someone drive by with an Oakland U Michigan license plate. For some odd reason I always feel a huge sense of pride when coming upon such occurrences so far removed from Oakland County.
