I don't think Oakland had an open look all night. We got the ball to the rim but there were always UV arms contesting. That's the best team we've played all year.
Season's not over. It's 2 bad games. Lots of games left. UV won't go through the league undefeated. Anything can happen in the tournament. We get refs that don't let as much contact go, it's a totally different ballgame. Our missed FTs let the game get out of hand too.

Here's a link to tonight's game story HERE. Have more photos coming after I get home, including some shots of the Grizz Gang and Kampe going bonkers. I didn't think a bird flying over my head inside my place as I was ready to leave to come to the game would be the most thrilling part of the night, but alas.

One of the many frustrations from the game tonight: if we have the "deepest bench ever" why were we running the same tired guys nonstop down the stretch? Why did Brechting play for 17 seconds tonight? Another thing, if you are going to overuse the same guys, why not call timeouts when Valpo goes on 5,7,9,or 12 point runs. I will never understand why he doesn't call "run stopping " timeouts. Painful sometimes

Don't even know what to say. That was a completely numbing experience. Production was great, Grizz Grang was great, fans were great and we just laid a big ole egg.
Terry Foster laid a lot of it out during his last column, but there's something very wrong with the chemistry of this team. Of my long list of complaints, numero uno is this team doesn't look they enjoy playing basketball. After our game against Eastern I remember walking out of the O'Rena completely struck by how much fun players like SDW and Gibson were having.
I realize this sounds absolutely ridiculous -- I just miss seeing our team have fun. Fix that and we can move forward.

Last year's team was very streaky. Maybe that same fortune will find them and they'll get some help to stay in the race for first. Even if last year's team wasn't as talented, there was a clear idea of when to pound it inside, and that was just a principle that everything was bounded by. I think the balance is a problem this year that's off, and then throwing in Martez is part of that process, too. Identity.
It was a bummer from any standpoint. Those games are always really fun, but this one never had much electricity, even if the crowd was great.

They played smarter and they might be better. We were definitely out coached. Not sure how we did not feed SDW the ball. He was on fire in the first half. They offense looked like something from the competitive league at the Y. Shame on us.

Not feeding the hot hand seems to be an issue in second halves unless the hot hand is Kay. This team has been BRUTAL in the second half of games and at making in game adjustments. I wonder if we miss Coach Sorenson more than we knew we would. Something is really messed up with this team on a coaching side right now. Weems was new and only here for a minute so I look to Sorenson's departure.
Something is definitely broke right now.

When the Grizz were/was moving the ball in the first half and KFelder was making drop back shots keeping the Crusaders on their toes the score was even. I was really impressed with OU's offensive production. Unfortunately for the GGs the bench for VU was much better and was able to wear down the OU offense. I think the They offense looked like something from the competitive league at the Y. Shame on us comes from the fact that Jamaican Fernandez didn't play bball as a kid and looks very awkward with his hands. Coach Drew knows Vashil can make some offensive plays on his hook shot and insists on going to Fernandez early in the shot clock. He probably fumbles 60% of these passes due to his hands. KFelder is extremely impressive but I believe despite what Coach Kampe thinks he should be sitting sometimes during games. Getting Hooper more involved in the offense when Greg is forced to take KFelder out and finding other combinations that work on offense would help. Playing better defense on the outside shot would help greatly too. One thing that I have seen over the years is that OU is much too dependent on their better offensive weapon and don't necessarily develop another offensive weapon well enough for when the better O weapon somehow gets stopped. I believe Valpo was more rounded with having more offensive weapons, a bench that plays just as well defensively as the starters and a team that is sold on defense as a way to win games. You won't see Valpo score in the 80's often because they have been holding a lot of teams in the 40's and 50's with their defense. Valpo will stumble again in conference as they did against Ball State (where they left their defense behind and didn't bring it to Muncie). It happens. I think Oakland will learn from this and move on. The next big Valpo/OU rivalry battle is Feb. 19, Friday at the ARC. I know the Valpo student body will be out and in full voice and also hope that the Kampe Krowd brings their "A" game so it will be another epic battle.
