OU Golden Grizzlies vs. Northern Kentucky Norse Tuesday January 19th 7:00pm (ET) (O'Rena) Rochester, MI Northern Kentucky Athletics: www.nkunorse.com/index.aspx?path=mbballNorse Fan Forum: www.norsefans.com/phpBB3/After the euphoria of beating the hated Titans in Calihan twice in three seasons it's time to move on to the next game. A home game with HL newcomer Northern Kentucky. The Norse have been competitive in most of their games this season even if they don't have the wins to show for it yet. They are 1-4 in the HL (beating Youngstown State) and have just come off a close loss to Cleveland State at home this past weekend. The Norse are led offensively by Jalen Billups, Cole Murray, and Drew McDonald. The Norse average about 70 ppg. They are pretty solid on the boards (avg 35.6 rpg) but average more turnovers than their opponents. I expect the guys to continue looking to run the offensive more efficiently, playing inside out, and looking for their shot instead of rushing to hoist one up. Need to take care of business at home before heading out on a grueling Wisconsin trip next weekend.

Cannot look ahead to the most important road trip of the season coming after this game. If we take 3 of the next 4 we will be in great position. Take care of business at home. We got back to our identity the last few games. Keep it going Grizz.

Another insightful insider from Terry Foster.

Hope Grizz gang shows up and the team handles their business at home again. Time to show who they're really going to be this year.

We need to ride into this game confident but mature enough to know anyone can beat anybody. Let's handle business in the O before the exhausting Wisconsin road trip!

Tomorrow night will be about consistency . I don't think we played particularly well against UIC/Mercy, but there was a much higher level of focus and intensity. Statistically, NKU is likely the 2nd worst team in the Horizon. However, both times I've watched them I've come away impressed with how well coached they are. I know a lot of people questioned NKU to the Horizon, but I'd be surprised if it doesn't end up working out well. They've got a fantastic arena (though it's more of a community arena) and seem to be throwing significant amount of money at their athletic department. I also really like their coach.
All that being said, they're still a team with Atlantic Sun caliber players trying to compete in the Horizon. I imagine NKU' will attempt to slow this game down as much as possible and prevent Oakland from getting into transition.
They have a center in Jalen Billups who is a very good player. Built similar to Hogan, I'm really interested to see how Gibson is able to defend him. Last game we saw Detroit with a clear strategy to attack our centers and get them into foul trouble. While his offensive game is completely on track, he needs to hold is ground more. Gibson averages 0.7 blocks per game. He's just not a shot blocking big, but still gets a significant number of fouls going for blocks. And even if he doesn't foul, that leaves us in a bad position for the defensive rebound.
In league play NKU has stepped it up on the defensive end. The main problem for them is a lack of creators on offense.
Look for Felder to spend the majority of the game trying to feed the ball to Hayes and Gibson. If Billups gets in early foul trouble NKU will be in big trouble. Would really like a big win heading into the biggest 2 game stretch of our season.

The insight from Terry Foster this year has been great. Perhaps his best writing in years. I thought he might phone it in, but he's really looked for unique angles. The one thing that has stood out in the last few columns is this refocus on an identity. I love Coach Kampe, but this is the second year that he has had to slow the tempo down a bit after talking about trying to impose our high-flying style of play on the Horizon League. If we've had to do that for two seasons straight, are we maybe learning that we can't win that way...at least playing that way 40 minutes every night? I am just glad that he is willing to adjust because he is on the record that he hates playing that way. Not all coaches would adapt.

What are we thinking for attendance tonight? I don't see any really big reasons for us to not have at least 3000 in attendance and a sizable Grizz Gang. The team deserves nothing less

What are we thinking for attendance tonight? I don't see any really big reasons for us to not have at least 3000 in attendance and a sizable Grizz Gang. The team deserves nothing less I think attendance for weeknight games is difficult to predict...could be 1,800 or could be 3,000. I really hope the Grizz Gang is prominent tonight; the day glow/neon promotion should be pretty cool if the students show up en masse. If I have to predict attendance for tonight, I'll guess 2,432...though closer to 3,000 would be great, and I agree the team deserves nothing less. Other than the Grizz Gang, the x-factor for the tonight's game (and all weeknight games) could be the general public...non-season ticket holders who aren't faculty, staff, or alumni. They would go to the game just because it's a cheap form of great entertainment nearby, or their kids really want to watch a college game, or whatever. If they come to the game tonight, that could be 3-5 more people per family in the O'rena. But if the kids have any sports or activities this evening, or just have a bunch of homework, then the whole family is out. I wish we could figure out a way to get more of the general public out to the games on a regular basis -- not just the Valpo or UDM games -- but it seems like there's just too much competition out there for people's time. I'm confident most people would have a great time if we could just get them to come out. I am guessing between 2800-2900 - Happy CAS night at the O'Rena!

I'm bringing 10 people from the accounting firm I'll be working after I graduate. A number of them are interns who are still attending Oakland University. More than 1 asked me where the O'Rena was. www.campuspressbox.com/2016/horizone-roundtable-3-getting-to-cleveland-states-problems-a-little-early-arent-you/?utm_campaign=cpbx-auto&utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=twitterPantherU (think Jimmy is his real name) and Bob MaCdonald had a lengthy discussion on why it's so hard to get students to CBB games. The whole things worth a listen, but PantherU had this idea about giving every single freshman a physical game ticket for basketball games. There's a huge collection of OU students who have no idea that 1. They pay for student tickets within their tuition. 2. They get in free with their student ID. We easily have the best student participation in the Horizon, but we still have a looooong way to go to create more fans who will purchase season tickets when they leave OU.
