I assume Newman sits out this season but Palmer can play right away? Article didn't mention it (and I didn't watch the video). Yes, Newman sits. In the vid Kampe said he's gotta watch Palmer in practice and see if can play big minutes this year. If not, he's gonna sit.

Palmer is a depth move at best. Low numbers ever at the JUCO level.

My expectations were not high for trying to replace Brock this time of year. We really just need him to defend and rebound right now. If he can do that, he can help. I hope Palmer develops more than that at OU. Kampe said he could run, and he is familiar w/ Neely which are 2 good things to build on.

I have no expectations that Palmer will even leave the bench this year. Though we did have an insurance big man like that last year, and look what happened with him.

Updating to account for the flurry of commitments the last few months. Let me know if anything seems off.

On radio today, Kampe dropped the following updates: - They find out this morning if James Beck has a stress fracture or not. - He said they are more or less planning not to have Brad Brechting back this year as he has another 4 weeks in the boot and they'd have a tough choice to make in mid-January when he can get out of the boot. - He said they may be shutting down Jaevin Cumberland for the year. He needs another surgery on the ankle and is really struggling. www.spreaker.com/user/9808881/greg-kampe-12-12

Id imagine he could easily take Palmer's minutes. This is "the year" after all right? Considering this was a deal they made with XHM to keep him from transferring, I think it'd be pretty Sh*tty to now try to convince him to give up his redshirt year.

Coach was making the rounds on radio today, and we got yet another update this afternoon from his appearance on the Schuilling report.
He said, "We lost James Beck today ... he has a stress fracture ... found out this morning he has a stress fracture."
So there's that.
He also said Nunn hasn't done anything in seven days. They will test him out later this week. He said if Nunn isn't 100% then he isn't going to play Saturday because he needs him at 100% for conference play.

In ten years of watching Oakland, I can only recall two times we had to rely on the so-called medical redshirt calculation where a player had participated in games. Derick Nelson's original senior year and Jalen Hayes' original freshman year. I think D-Nel tried to go in the MSU game but he wasn't ready so he was shut down (and came back for a redshirt senior season that resulted in an NCAA tourney). J Hayes was recovering from mono and tried to go early in his freshman year but they shut it down after a few minutes of playing time.
Now, we potentially have two candidates for this rule in one season, not to mention Brad's potential redshirt for medical reasons (though he hasn't participated yet). So crazy.
As a reminder, you can redshirt after playing games if it is the result of an injury or illness; if the injury or illness occurs prior to the first game of the second half of the season; and if the student-athlete "has not participated in more than 30 percent of the institution's scheduled or completed contests or dates of competition in his or her sport." In the case of fractions in percent computation, it is rounded to the "next whole number." 31 games scheduled x .3 = 9.3 games, rounded to the next whole number = 10. So 10 would be the max, which Beck and Cumberland are under at this point to retain a full season of eligibility, if they do not come back this year.

I usually agree but sh*tty or not we need players that can play. Having this many injured kinda changes things IMO.
