We played HORRIBLY! Why do we even bother to play the big boys if we can't beat eastern at home?? 4 most of the game our team played like they we're sleep. We didn't even box out possession after possession & they got Offensive reb's bc of that. Defensively they kept running the same plays & we kept falling 4 it; penetrate & kick it deep 4 a 3 on the left side.
Offensively everybody played soft except D Nel & JJ at the end of the 2nd. Benson played horrid!
One of the things I hate about Kampes system is that we live & die by the 3. 2night we died by it. Why didn't we have better ball movement, there we're so many 1 or 2 pass possessions where we failed. If this is the kind of ball they're gonna play, were gonna have a loooonngg year!
That was embarrasing EMU has been a D1 doormat 4 years, i'm disguisted.

Oh yeah, I really miss Kangas & Strat. Strat would have at least rallied the team & played w/ some fire, played D, got some rebounds and maybe block a shot or 2. Kangas opened up the floor 4 Benson & everybody else.

A lot of the individual numbers from our three best players were pretty good (what got lost in all of this was Benson also had 8 blocks, so 2 away from a triple double), but no one else looked especially good, especially Larry Wright. He came up with nothing tonight.
On a positive note, Nelson was getting to the basket with relative ease, but he wasn't finishing. He missed a ton of high percentage shots and putbacks after getting to the rim, and then we all know how painful it was to watch him miss all but one free throw. Aside from these percentages, his numbers were pretty solid. He and Bowdry were almost identical in the statline, but Bowdry killed him at the line.
Other positive was JJ played like a freaking man out there. That block he had in transition was a great play.

What Question is Kampe talking about disagreeing with? :
"On Johnathon Jones’ offensive burst in the second half “I don’t what JJ was talking about there because down the stretch, we got every shot we wanted. Think about that. Larry Wright comes off, ball rattles in and out, goes out, gets the rebound, makes one, misses one on the foul. Next time down, we come out, get one on the inside, we score. Next time we run down, the play’s not there and we give the ball to JJ because he’s wide open and he makes the three. Now, we get the stop and give it to Benson on the block. He goes into traffic, whistle doesn’t blow and he doesn’t convert. We foul, they go down, we get what we want with the free throws, we come down and get the wide open shot. So, I’m not sure what that was. I think JJ was trying to be nice to you for the question that you asked. I don’t agree with the question and I don’t agree with JJ’s answer. We got what we wanted, we just didn’t convert.”"
Senior guard Johnathon Jones On taking a while to find their offensive groove “I think we had jitters settling in. We have a lot of players playing different spots and once they got there, we were able to run the offense well.”
On his scoring rally in the second half “I just choose my spots for when I can attack. I don’t like to force things and I don’t like to put pressure on myself. When I see an opening, I try to take advantage of it.”
On where he feels the team has improved compared to a year ago “I would say our intensity. We played pretty well on defensive end and picking the ball up a lot. But we have to run the key plays. We had the chance to tie it up and we didn’t execute right. I put that on me; I should have gotten people into position and to play right. On the defensive end, we have to pick that up."

JJ was great all night long. That block in transition was huge. And the high feed to Maynard for the dunk was great, too.
A lot of positives on the individual level, but the team came up short - especially defensively.

Someone must have asked a question about EMU taking us out of our offense, keeping us from getting good looks, or something like that. JJ may have tried to be polite in answering the question, but Kampe wanted to make it clear that we got the looks we wanted. They just didn't fall.

Lets not panic here people. Eastern is a better team than we thought. They WILL NOT be a dormant MAC team this year.
We showed some rust, and you guys have to realize that 2 of our 5 starters DIDN'T play last year. It will take a couple games for them to gel and get the team chemistry going the way that they want it.
Yes, our defense played poorly, but I know that Kampe and company will do everything in their power to fix that, and they will.
I guarantee that Wright will never go 0-9 beyond the arc EVER again. Cush too, will not go 1-7 beyond the arc the rest of the season.
Its one game, the season is NOT lost. We will be fine. The team will learn a lot about this loss and move on.

I agree Leobrn, when you go 4-22 from beyond the arc as a team and shoot 9-20 from the charity stripe, you are destined to lose. We had a chance and played that poorly, that should be an accomplishment in itself. Eastern will make some noise in the MAC this year and it shower last night that we need more physical play in the post. Kito got backed down all night long and when he wasn't in there, the next guy had the same thing happen to him. Yea he ended with 8 blocks, but our physical play in the post was weak. Lets look forward and bring on the Badgers.

I agree with nate and leo that there's no reason to panic. I guarantee that the team is not panicking. We all saw what happened on the floor: we had the worst outside shooting night imaginable and got caught by an EMU team with talented players who played well and hit clutch shots. We still had a chance to pull it out at the end and just couldn't get it done. On to Wisconsin.
I doubt the outside shooting woes will continue (that should actually be a strong point this year), but we have to find a defensive answer in the paint.

but we have to find a defensive answer in the paint. Definitely. If Kito is going to get pushed around by Matt Balkema of all people, then I don't even want to watch him against Cole Aldrich.
