Who else is torn on the EMU/Valpo game that will be at the O'Rena over the holiday break? I want nothing more than for the team to get another shot at the Eagles after last season's opening game loss. But it'd be great to see Oakland-Valpo once again. Anyway, EMU should be solid again. I just wanted to post this video I saw from Jeff Goodman's blog of Fox Sports: msn.foxsports.com/video/college-basketball?vid=e7196c8f-2f90-4ea4-a977-a69e25370af9Kind of strange that he stopped there, considering all the other stops were Big Ten teams and the like. But it was nice to see a bit of EMU coverage paired with those. The thing about the video of that arena is even though it is incredibly nice, NO ONE goes to games. That is what it looks like during a game, just add some players to the court. EMU has to get people in the stands this year while they have Bowdry. I've seen a game there before and was impressed with the facility but it has absolutely no atmosphere.

Valpo beat EMU, we beat Valpo. Therefore OU > Valpo > EMU. I'd rather see us play Valpo any day.

I agree totally about how nice the Convo is, and that absolutely no one goes to the games. The Ypsi community is a tough sell, but I'm not sure why students there are so disinterested (even teams that don't win consistently can count on much more student support than they get). I know EMU has a big commuter student population, but they at least have around the same percentage of on-campus students as Oakland (both around 15%).
Also, gotta agree with Grizzfan and Nate. VALPO! After losing so many in a row to them in the Mid-Con, we're now riding a whopping 2 game winning streak against the Crusaders - and we can never even out the record books if we never get to play them.

Yeah the convo ctr is very nice, but nobody cares abut EMU sports in that town. I think in part bc they've been sooo bad for as long as I can remember, and/or they play 2nd fiddle to the school down the road there, U of M. It's not cool to root for EMU in Ypsi, it's actually alot cooler to say they suck. I used to live in that area, and i've got family who went there.

Actually 3 straight. Split with them in 05-06 to win for the first time and then swept the season series with them in 06-07 "their last year in the league".

Interesting (and sad) article about the struggles of EMU athletics: www.annarbor.com/sports/budget-shortfalls-put-more-pressure-on-eastern-michigan-athletic-department/As bad as support for EMU basketball has been (averaging 925 in attendance over the past 5 years), the football situation is even more embarrassing. EMU has the lowest attendance in all of FBS (nearly twice as low as the next lowest team, Fla. Intl.), and they have to rely on a contract with Pepsi to artificially "buy" enough tickets to each home game to keep them FBS-eligible. Mainly because of football, EMU is forced to devote 20% of its overall financial aid budget to athletes (who make up 2.5% of the student population), and on top of that you have huge facility and equipment costs, insurance, massive travel expenses for recruiting, etc. I know many students at Oakland want to start a football program (and I have often felt that way on Saturday afternoons, too), but the huge costs and the example of what's happened at EMU will probably make that a tough sell for the OU administration for the foreseeable future.

I agree that it's very sad to see how much that school has struggled with athletics... and I agree 100 percent with what you said about how much it would really take to get a football program started at OU. There are only 5 teams in the whole country (if I remember correctly) that actually make money on their football program... the millions of dollars could be used for better things at OU like upgrading housing and even a new athletics center for us. I don't see it happening any time soon... sorry OU people, guess you will have to stick with your U of M/MSU loyalties during football season lol
