Good to hear B&G say (in another thread) that Kampe discussed the Maynard situation during the WXOU show today.
Anyone who heard the show care to recap some of the other major points? (I couldn't listen today, and I don't see a podcast option on the wxou site.)

Good to hear B&G say (in another thread) that Kampe discussed the Maynard situation during the WXOU show today. Anyone who heard the show care to recap some of the other major points? (I couldn't listen today, and I don't see a podcast option on the wxou site.) I recorded most of it and was going to offer privately to anyone who didn't hear it but unfortunately it didn't save right as I was rushing to close my laptop and get to class. Will try to do that next time. Here's a little of what I remember. One thing I thought was interesting was he noted that this weekend's games will tell him a lot about playing time. In my interpretation of how he worded it, it seemed like he was saying that he needs to see Larry perform like he did in the last 7-minutes of the APSU game this weekend for his minutes not to get cut by Ryan Bass. He did also say that Larry would probably like Bass to get more minutes too since it would let Larry play more off-the-ball. He confirmed that Petros will redshirt for sure now. Said something like "imagine if we had redshirted Will and he was just a junior right now" and used that as his reasoning for wanting to give Petros a redshirt year to develop. Said that he wants to recruit more guys like Dante Williams, those long and athletic wings. Said he is in the mold of a Rawle Marshall but not defensively where Rawle was in high school. He said he wants to get a pool of players like that since it would be unique in the Summit League except for maybe IUPUI. Really likes Williams. Gave Benson a lot of props for his development but also said you have to credit the staff for that. (and used that as a segway to talk about where he thinks Sikora can be in 2-3 years with his staff's development). He is also a big fan of IPFW. Really likes what they are doing right now.

I requested that it be podcasted for myself and for the forum. It should be up tomorrow some time according to Matt Pocket at WXOU.

I've been doing some digging around the net to find Oakland's game results from the 1990s, particularly 1992 through the jump to Division I (if anyone can help me out here, it would be much appreciated - can't seem to find archived game results anywhere for Division II). Anyway, I came across this awesome story from the Associated Press from 1993. A couple things to note: it was written after Oakland pasted Madonna College which came after they got the "Black Line Upset" over Toledo. Also notice at the end that Coach Kampe is talking about possession statistics, an advanced metric, in 1993! He was a pioneer in more than one way! December 27, 1993, Monday, AM cycle
SECTION: Sports News
LENGTH: 471 words
DATELINE: ROCHESTER, Mich.
Oakland University's basketball team was approaching 70 points, and it was still a couple of minutes before halftime. Coach Greg Kampe turned to an assistant and said, "We're liable to score 80."
The Pioneers quickly hit five 3-pointers, and assistant coach Eric Stephan turned to Kampe and said, "No. We're going to get 90."
Oakland led 91-58 at halftime as it rolled to a 189-107 rout over Madonna on Dec. 20. That win, coupled with an 86-65 victory over Division I Toledo a few days earlier, put the Pioneers' basketball team in the national spotlight for the first time.
The Pioneers broke nine school records against Madonna even though four-year starters Tom Eller and Ty McGregor were held out against the first-year opponent. With Eller and McGregor, Oakland might have threatened the Division II record of 258 points by Troy State.
"The Toledo game was what made people take notice of our program," said Kampe, who has guided the Pioneers to a 7-1 record this season and a 132-71 mark since arriving in 1984.
"If we hadn't beaten Toledo, people would have said the 189 points were a fluke, or that Madonna must be a really bad team," Kampe said. "Because of the Toledo game, people are saying, 'Oakland must be a pretty good team."'
The victory over the Rockets was also a personal triumph for Kampe, who was an assistant coach for six seasons under former Toledo coach Bob Nichols.
"I'm an Ohio boy. I played at Bowling Green. We won three MAC championships while I was at Toledo and we were ranked in the top 20 nationally. I have a lot of good memories," Kampe said. "To come back, see the people and then dominate the game like we did - you couldn't write a better script."
McGregor, a senior guard from Mio, agrees.
"We were well-prepared for the game and the Division I against Division II thing was all the motivation we needed," he said. "We just wanted to see what we could do."
Kampe is the only basketball coach in school history with a winning record. Before he arrived, the Pioneers' main claim to sports fame had been in swimming and soccer.
Only 75 spectators showed up to Kampe's first game. Last weekend, more than 200 Oakland fans made the trip to Toledo.
The Pioneers are averaging 108 points a game and in eight games have hit 107-of-292 3-pointers. That's an average of 36.5 3-point attempts per game.
"We want to shoot 3-pointers and run up and down the court. Kids these days want freedom and we try to give it to them. I like to coach that way, too," Kampe said.
Although Oakland is allowing opponents to score 91 point a game, Kampe bristles when someone suggests the Pioneers don't play good defense.
"You have to look at our possessions-per-game," he said. "We're averaging 91.2 possessions a game. We're only giving up one point a possession. That's great defense."

I know this is a Kampe thread, but Coach Tungate was just in to my work and I got to talk to him and his wife for a little bit. What a couple of really nice people they are. They love the support they are getting from the fans.
