Congrats to him... it's well deserved. Hopefully he will be able to handle being overseas with or without his daughter because i'm sure that will be tough to situate.

Quote from Nelson that should be part of the university's next marketing campaign: "Oakland taught me how to be a man."
I'm only half joking. Sure beats the hell out of last year's "You Can Afford This" slogan.

Apparently Nelson didn't get off to such a great start at Kouvot, and he's now with a different Finnish team: KORISLIIGA: Kouvot will change the rosterwww.eurobasket.com/Finland/basketball.asp?NewsID=204714Oct 1, 2010. Kouvot (Kouvola) new Head Coach Jyri Lehtonen is not happy with the season start of American F Derick Nelson (196-F-86, agency: ACMT, college: Oakland). Nelson, averaging 7,0 ppg - 4,0 rpg after three games can go and will be replaced by another American F Isaac Spencer (198-F-77, agency: R.H.Consultancy, college: Murray St.). Spencer will bring a lot of experience as he has played pro basketball in several countries: Spain, Holland, Philippines, France, Dominican Republic, South Korea and two seasons (2008-10) in Finland. ----- It must be tough to live in a place like Finland without close friends or family in the first place, and struggling on the court has to make it worse. Fortunately, he scored 22 and had 11 boards in the first game with his new team (Lapuan Korikobrat) on October 3. Nelson seems like a great guy, and hopefully things will go well for him from now on.

Nice update, Germane. That is some crazy news. I wonder how often that happens overseas, especially in the smaller leagues? It's really hard to tell, but from looking at the Eurobasket page, it appears that he is now in a different league in Finland so (if there are no cross-division games) he probably won't be making it back to Kovout anytime soon.
It's great that he got the switch so fast. So much about Americans playing overseas is interesting to me, like how did this go down this fast? Was he lucky that there was just a random team in Finland that needed another guy? How did Kovout fill their spot so quickly? And those are just basketball related, but if you think he had to get a new place to live and move and all that jazz, without knowing the language. I guess you can liken it to a guy getting traded mid-season over here, but at least here they can speak the language. Hopefully D-Nel's agent is a good one.

That is great news for OU on the international level. Good to see we have players going out and stepping up. JJ has been playing well overseas as well. Those are impressive numbers from DNel but not surprising based on his physical/aggressive style of play.

Nelson has played 4 games with his new team, and the are 2-2 overall. They lost their first 2 games and won the next 2 games. He has 87 points in 4 games, so he is averaging just under 22 points a game. He has 41 boards in those 4 games, so averaging just a shade over 10 boards a game. Averaging a double-double through 4 games is pretty impressive, since he his new to the game over there. Hopefully he keeps up the good work.
